Props Research

In our music video there are various props that are used, in order to make our video look more attractive and make it fit in with the look we are going for. 

Plastic handcuffs are used at the beginning of the video to symbolize her breaking free and being 'wild'.

Lipstick is used to draw the artists name on the mirror at the beginning of the video, which sets off the video as her being a rebellious character. 

The exercise bike is used quite a lot in our video we got this from Miley Cyrus's video as we though it was a fun and different idea. 

Grillz:

Grillz are a teeth accessory used frequently in new music videos. However the price of this accessory is expensive and beyond our budget, therefore we came up with an alternative idea of using tin foil to create a similar look.

Mise en Scene:

During the progression of making our video, certain things have been unable to happen. So, to make sure our video is still of a high standard we have added different bits in to fill up the video such as drinking, using a lighter and smoking. we have also set things up so that they look good and are in the style of the video.

Types of shot and camera angle

Dolly shot

 A dolly shot is used in a lot of filming including music video's. Here is a brief description of a dolly shot and how it is used.

A dolly is a cart which travels along tracks. The camera is mounted on the dolly and records the shot as it moves. Dolly shots have a number of applications and can provide very dramatic footage.

In many circles a dolly shot is also known as a tracking shot or trucking shot. However some professionals prefer the more rigid terminology which defines dolly as in-and-out movement (i.e. closer/further away from the subject), while tracking means side-to-side movement.

Something that we will be doing a lot of in our music video is Continuity cuts: These are cuts that take us seamlessly and logically from one sequence or scene to another. This is an unobtrusive cut that serves to move the narrative along. Although there is no real narrative in our video we will be using this to jump from different scenes instead of showing a whole long clip we will take the good parts and push them together.

This is one series from our story board which shows how we will use continuity cuts, in order to allow the bet parts of the scene to be shown in the video.



A technique that will be more frequently shown in our video is: Cross-cutting: Cutting between different sets of action that can be occurring simultaneously or at different times, (this term is used synonymously but somewhat incorrectly with parallel editing.) Cross-cutting is used to build suspense, or to show the relationship between the different sets of action.

Here is another series taken from our story board that displays the use of cross-cutting in our video. This is very continuous in our video and ties in with the message, that is about being young and free and doing a lot of different things.

Most of the scenes in our music video will be steady shots that are filmed from a mid shot view point. Some parts of the video will be closer up and some will be filmed from a wider angle to enable more to be in the video at one time.

As you can see in this first page of our story board there is a mixture of mid shots, close up shots, and medium close up's. This allows our video to have depth and not be at the same angle and distance throughout, which makes it more appealing to an audience.

Further research and planning

Here is some further research and planning into how we would film specific scenes and parts of the video that are shown several times throughout. in our video, a lot of the time scenes will only be shown a few seconds and then will cu to something different.

Here are 3 shots of ideas of how we could film the dancing on the bed shots there are different angles and levels that can be used as shown above. When filming we will film in about 20 second sections and then beak them up and put them together, however there will be continuity in the shots to make everything flow like the ones above.

We chose to have our title as writing on a mirror with lipstick because it creates a rebellious vibe that starts of the video. These shots from Miley Cyrus's video '23' show the continuity of what is happening which is what we will do when we are filming our video. This particular scene will b filmed from in-front of a mirror on a side angle where we will only s the artist.

For the parts of the video that the are pool shots, in some parts there are a chain of shots in the pool but filmed from different angles and level like close ups of the artist of far away one of the whole pool. In other parts of the video there will be a pool shot and then something completely different so above are some of the ways we are going to film these parts of the video.

style and costume research

Style and costume research

For the costumes and style in our video there are a lot of characters to consider. The main character of our video will have more than one costume but will all be in the same sort of provocative style. For a lot of the time in the video our model will be wearing either a white crop top and leggings or white crop top and shorts. This outfit will be worn for scenes such as the bath and bed scenes and will be accessorized by sunglasses, shoes and jewelry. 

For another scene at the end of the video, our main model will be wearing an outfit different to the rest of the 
clothes she wears in the video. 

Fur Coat:

The fur coat is worn by our main model and myself in the video. Fur is a generic music video asset that is mostly used to show power of the singer. Luckily I have a real fur coat that we can use in our video, which is better than using faux fur that would not give the same effect. 

Other Characters

There are many other characters in our music video to consider. Most of the 'extra' parts are wearing either similar clothing to the main character or are not shown from the shoulders down and have the part of their body that is shown to be nude. This includes the shots of people with sweets on their tongues and people wearing mustaches.

For the animal scene with people jumping on bouncy hoppers with animal faces, they will be dressed in plain clothing with just their faces painted as animals.

Unfortunately, we are unable to continue with this part of the video as the price of the props is too expensive and we have decided to take away the animal faces an space hoppers and just have people running down a corridor. 

For another scene in our video there will be a girl wearing ripped tights and ballet shows standing on a podium.

For the beginning of our research we looked at Miley Cyrus's song and video 'We Cant Stop'. We all agreed that this is the style of video that we want to do and began to look at the different aspects and scenes of the video. As we decided we would focus on the style of this video we chose to have a different song, that still portrays the themes, which is about being young. The Video we want to create will consist of random scenes put together with no story or narrative to it. The song we chose is Kesha- We Are Who We Are. Miley's video has inspired us to create a video that is about being young and 'wild', using a series of different scenarios and shots that have no real meaning or story-line.

These two collages I have created give an overview of what the We Cant Stop video looks like and the types of images and lifestyle that we wish to portray to the audience of our music video, which is young people. We will be using a selection of ideas from this video and also other videos to help us develop ideas and come up with some completely unique ones as well. 

Opening Image

We want to have the opening of our video to be the artist name and then the name of the song over a background image. This is a generic factor in a lot of music videos but it is done in many different styles.

These are some of the different ways I have found that can be used to show the artist's name and song at the beginning of a video. The colours that we will use on our video will probably be white, red and black, therefore some of these, like the Kesha ones will not be appropriate for our video. The Miley Cyrus video '23' with the lipstick on the mirror is an idea that we are going to use and think it is a very creative way of doing something that a lot of videos do using text on the screen. However the Iggy Azalea 'Change Your Life' one is very bold and stands out against the picture, so we could have this as a back up plan in case the lipstick idea does not work.

Other ideas for parts of the video

When researching we have found many similar ideas that we like and want to put in our video, this includes pool shots, the use of animals (dogs), grillz (used for teeth), fire and sparklers, people singing on beds and in bath tubs and applying make-up.

Pool Shots: These two shots are from the 'We Cant Stop' video and show some generic pool images, however to get more ideas of how to film a pool scene we have looked at other videos and more ways of filming in a pool.

These are some of the different pool shots I have found in my research. They are all very different and show diverse ways of using a pool in a music video. Some of the ideas like the men sitting on chairs underwater, have inspired us to look for and create some more pool ideas that are different and will make our video more exciting.

 Use of Animals: The use of animals is in quite a few videos and we feel that it is a good way of making the video more eye catching and makes it stand out. In some videos the animals used are tigers which is obviously not an option for our video however we have access to our own animals which is dogs.

Grillz: These images show the artists wearing grillz that go in your teeth although you cannot see them very well. We are going to look further into this idea and see if there are ways around using them as it would be an expensive idea to use.

Fire, Sparklers and Smoking: Here are some images from 3 different music videos that all have a common theme of fire/smoke. Our original idea of creating a word from fire may be difficult so the idea of using sparklers is a good alternative and gives the same bold affect. The coloured cigarette is also a really fun idea that would fit well with the theme of our music video. If other parts of the video do not go to plan then these could be used as fillers as they still fit the style.

Singing and Dancing on bed and bath: In many music videos this is a common look that is used but is done in many different styles and shot differently and at different angles. The clothing that is worn in these types of scenes is youthful and provocative to attract the audience. The idea of laying down and being relaxed and laid back fits the young and wild vibe that we are going to create in our video.

As shown in these shots there are many ways of shooting scenes like this. The one from Iggy Azalea's video is quite different as it is shot from a side angle and stands out among the others. The colours in this one are perhaps too warm and we will go for brighter colder colours like the Rita Ora or Miley Cyrus ones.

Applying make-up/ mirror shots: Another idea for our video is to have the main star of the video looking in the mirror applying make-up to go with the young vibe. This will be filmed from the side so that the shot is only of the artists reflection and not the camera.

Money: The first shot is taken from Miley Cyrus's video 'We Cant Stop' of the man eating a money sandwich and fits well with the lyric in our song 'tearing it apart' however it would be too similar to copy the idea exactly so we had the idea of either ripping up money or throwing it. In the second image it shows money being laid down which indicates a big lifestyle which we wold like to reference to in our video.
